Careers Awareness Week, 6 – 9 February

Get your career into gear, and make your job applications stand out for all the right reasons - by taking part in Careers Awareness Week 2017

Careers Awareness WeekThe Careers Office at LYIT is delighted to announce details of its upcoming Careers Awareness Week which will be taking place from 6–9 February.  Presented by experienced careers professionals, Careers Awareness Week will consist of a series of lunchtime seminars (1.30 – 2.30 pm daily in the CoLab at LYIT).

These presentations will cover hot careers topics including Using LinkedIn in your Job Search, Applying to Postgraduate Courses, Successful Job Applications and Your First Job: what to expect in the first 100 days. 

Catherine Lyster, Careers Officer at LYIT, outlines that, “Careers Awareness Week is a wonderful opportunity for all students, especially final year students and graduates, to gain tips from the experts which will ensure they will be confident in promoting their unique selling points in job/course applications and interviews.”

Careers Awareness Week begins on Monday 6th February with a presentation by Emma Boylan on ‘Using LinkedIn in your Job search’.  Emma owns ‘Outside the Box’, a very successful Letterkenny-based PR company. Attendees will learn how to set up a good profile, be aware of the do’s and don’ts of using LinkedIn for job hunting, and will discover useful tips on how to get their profile noticed by the corporates.

Tuesday 7th February will be of interest to those who are applying for postgraduate courses. Presented by Dr Joanne Gallagher, Head of Department of Science, LYIT, and Catherine Lyster, Careers Officer, LYIT, this seminar will provide information on best resources to use when researching postgraduate programmes, which includes information on sourcing and funding in Ireland, UK and further afield.  This session will address key questions to ask of the departmental head.  The topic of personal statements will be addressed; what to include and avoid, and to familiarise yourself with what course selectors are looking for in a personal statement.

Dermot Gallagher, HR Officer, ZEUS Letterkenny, will provide some valuable insights on Wednesday 8th February on ‘Successful Job Applications’ where attendees will gain top tips on how to craft a well-written cover letter and CV. They will also become aware of common mistakes candidates make in job applications and how to avoid them.

The final seminar of Careers Awareness Week will take place on Thursday 9th February. Your First Job: What to expect in the first 100 days! Presented by Bernie Wilson, who has extensive experience as manager in major retail bank, you will gain a great insight into what really goes on in the world of work. By the end of this session, you will get  great tips on settling into a new work environment, building your confidence and interacting with senior colleagues and customers.  Not alone will this information prove invaluable in your first 100 days but also when you will be completing graduate job applications
