Enabling Maths Initiative
Upon completion and passing of this two-week course, students who are otherwise eligible but lack a pass in ordinary level Maths, can apply for a place on a programme at LYIT for which there are “Available Places”
This year more than 4,000 students have failed their Leaving Certificate maths exams, effectively locking them out of many third-level courses which require a pass as a basic entry requirement. Grades in the higher level maths paper have stabilised with more than 70 percent securing an honour, but the failure rate in the ordinary level paper jumped from 5.8 to 9.2 percent this year.
With this in mind, the Donegal Education and Training Board (DETB) and Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) have launched the “Enabling Maths Initiative” arising from the signing of a formal memorandum of understanding between LYIT and DETB in January 2016. The development of this course in Mathematics is designed to give young people a second chance to succeed in Mathematics and thus, overcome the entry requirements to enter a wide range of courses at LYIT, for the coming academic year 2016/2017.
The course commences at Letterkenny Institute of Technology for two weeks this Monday 5th September until Friday 16th September 2016. No course fees will be applied. The final examination will be of an equivalent standard to the current leaving certificate ordinary mathematics paper and will be set and assessed by mathematics teachers nominated by DETB.
The primary person who this course is targeted towards are applicants who are otherwise eligible but lack a pass in ordinary level Maths. Upon completion and passing of the two week “Enabling Maths” course, applicants will be eligible for a place on any programme in LYIT for which there are “available places”. The list of LYIT’s ‘Available Places’ is published on www.cao.ie and changes on a daily basis so applicants are encouraged to view this as soon as possible. In all cases, applicants must meet the minimum entry requirements (see www.lyit.ie/full-timecourses for details) and the current CAO points for the relevant programme.
If you wish to view the “Enabling Maths” course schedule please go to www.lyit.ie for further information or alternatively if you would like to apply please contact Anne Brennan at the Curve on 074 918 6175 or e-mail email@example.com. The closing date for applications is Friday 2 September 2016 at 12 noon.
