LYIT Agriculture students visit European Parliament in Brussels

Ag students visit European ParliamentIn March 2017, third year students from the LYIT Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Agriculture programme embarked on a four-day trip to the European Parliament in Brussels. During their trip the group also visited a number of farms and agriculture related industries in Belgium.  Hosted by the Irish Member of European Parliament (MEP) Mairead McGuinness, the LYIT student group also met with Seán Kelly, MEP, and Deirdre Clune, MEP. During the visit the students met Austrian MEP Elisabeth Kostinger, who kindly shared her experiences of growing up on a farm in Austria, and the current difficulties facing Austrian farmers.  Following the meeting with MEPs the students visited 3 local farms - one dairy, one beef and a third sheep, crop and pig farm. The group also visited the world famous Stella Artois brewery, which included a masterclass in pouring the perfect Stella Artois beer.

Dr Joanne Gallagher, Head of Department of Science at LYIT, commented, “The BSc Degree in Agriculture at LYIT has gone from strength-to-strength, students undertaking this programme have opportunities to travel and network, and the third year’s recent trip to Brussels provided a valuable learning experience for students, from a European agricultural context. This excursion has given students an experience they’ll never forget and is one of the many reasons why this programme is growing in popularity. Irish students, studying an agriculture discipline, must now consider the agriculture sector in Ireland from a European context. At LYIT, the BSc in Agriculture is leading the way in delivering a programme that supports young Irish farmers, and provides them with skills necessary to succeed in this sector.” The BSc in Agriculture at LYIT is approved for Revenue and DAFM listing for the purposes of eligible awards for Trained Farmer status (Green Cert).
