In March 2009, a team of third year learners from the BB International Tourism and Hospitality Enterprise and the BB in International Culinary Enterprise achieved 3rd place in the Irish Hospitality Institute (IHI) Business Management Game 2009.

The team members were: Eva Kolarova, Grainne Cullen, Jimmy Brogan, Geraldine Desmond, Martina Hanlon, and Marguerite Thompson.

The 24th IHI Business Management Game, which took place in the Galway Bay Hotel, attracted 14 teams representing young hospitality managers of the future from all over Ireland.  The competing teams were from University of Ulster, Institutes of Technology from Cork, Athlone, Waterford, Galway-Mayo, Dundalk, Dublin, Letterkenny, Griffith College Dublin and Fáilte Ireland’s Trainee Management Development Programme (TMDP).

As this was the first time that a team competed from the School of Tourism, to achieve 3rd place overall was a significant accomplishment.

Game participants spent two days devising a strategy, planning and managing a fictitious hospitality business in a simulated business environment, reflecting current economic constraints.  The Business Management Game was based on the HOTS system (hospitality business management simulation software).  The HOTS developed programme was pitched for business in a highly competitive environment where realistic operating budgets were of paramount importance, most especially in the areas of staff recruitment and development.
