Focus on Fitness

Staff were invited to focus on fitness during March 2009.

Fourth year Sports Development and Coaching students at LYIT organised a Focus on Fitness Fortnight at the end of March 2009.  Staff were invited to take part in activities to help with overall health promotion.  Local woman, Ann Marie Ward, Round Ireland swimmer and only the fourth Irish woman in history to swim the English Channel, launched the event.

Martina Sandilands, lecturer said, “The students had the opportunity to put what they’ve learned into practice by devising novel ways to engage staff and students.  They’ve organised lots of activities, many raising funds for charities, so it’s been a very busy 2 weeks.  Of course, it was a good opportunity for staff to improve their overall fitness in an enjoyable way.”

The idea behind Focus on Fitness is to show that exercise and healthy eating can be easily incorporated into a daily routine and is good fun.  “We all feel a bit sluggish after the winter so it’s time to get back into doing something, whether it’s yoga classes, jogging, sport or simply walking.  Even dedicating 30 minutes a day to some form of exercise can make a huge difference to body and mind,” said Martina.
