    Is this Course for You?
This course raises interest and awareness of the key issues in energy systems, introducing learners to the major concerns arising from environmental effects and depletion of carbon based energy sources.
Having a grounding in the fundamentals of physics, learners will gain an overview of the complexities in choosing and developing alternative energy sources.
The information and knowledge gained may be applied to the benefit of the community and the environment.
    Minimum Entry Requirements
A working knowledge of Leaving Certificate maths and physics is desirable

    Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this programme learners will have the ability to:
    • Discuss renewable energy issues in a professional context
    • Understand and implement technical instruction
    • Apply scientific concepts to environmental situations
    • Explain the difference between vector and scalar quantities; define and understand the various physical laws and equations associated with mechanics, the physical and thermal properties of matter and the gas laws.
    • Understand and explain wave motion and it applications in sound and light.
    • Discuss quantum theory and apply it to models of the atom and light emission.
    • Perform practical investigations and record, describe and interpret the results of these investigations.
    • Analyse the benefits and differences between various energy sources.
    • Evaluate the factors affecting economics in renewable energies.
    • Examine the environmental impact of different renewable energy systems.
    • Appraise the key economic issues involved in renewable energy systems.
Learners who progress to courses such as the BEng in Building Services and Renewable Energy will gain exemptions in Construction Science and Renewable Energy Resources modules in the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction.
