It will help develop a competence in instrument calibration, sample analysis and result's interpretation for each of the analytical methods covered.

3. Explain the principles behind ISEs and potentiometric analysis.

This module will introduce the learners to drug action, the basic concepts of drug design and the physiochemical properties of a molecule that are important in therapeutic action. It will demonstrate the important principles of drug delivery and the biological factors that affect these processes and provide an understanding of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics.

Working with real datasets from biology, physiology, health, nutrition, chemistry, ecology, and microbiology, this module will develop competency in methods used in probability-based statistical inference.

3. Use statistical methods for inference that compares the distributions of two variables.

This module will develop the basic concepts of sample preparation and the separation of a wide variety of molecules that are important in the pharmaceutical industry. It will demonstrate the important principles of method development and the chromatographic factors that affect these separations and provide a thorough understanding of chromatographic method validation and transfer.

This module will familiarize the learner with types of microorganisms and describe pathogen and host interactions. The learner will be introduced to sterile and non-sterile drug production facilities and the design and operation of cleanrooms. The student will learn about the measures required to maintain and validate these environments and the microbial tests that must be performed on pharmaceutical products and medical devices to ensure their safety.

1. Characterise the structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms and viruses.
2. Understand the conditions that affect growth and be able to exploit these to cultivate microorganisms.
3. Assess methods for the enumeration and identifications of microorganisms.
4. Describe the design of cleanrooms and how these are monitored and maintained.

This module will enhance the research, presentation and communication skills of the student enabling them to undertake and present their research and practical class results in an improved and appropriate style.

2. Plan, perform and refine a targeted search strategy of the scientific literature using appropriate search engines to source and evaluate data for a literature review.
3. Abstract, collate, record and organise scientific data in an improved scientific style.
4. Prepare a high quality scientific poster suitable for a scientific workshop, avoiding common pitfalls, and critically evaluate the work of others.

This module will introduce the learner to the basic principles and unit operations involved in pharmaceutical processing. It will also equip the student with knowledge of process diagrams and designs along with some information on waste management. It will also provide the student with information on medical device manufacturing and associated processes.

3. Assess strategies for waste management in the pharmaceutical industry.

This module will provide learners with an understanding of spectral analysis of organic compounds and develop techniques & procedures important for structural elucidation.

1. Examine the principles, instrumentation, and applications of UV/visible, IR, and mass spectroscopy.
2. Apply the principles for the interpretation of spectral data.
3. Perform calculations to obtain information from spectroscopic data.
4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding by solving various spectroscopic problems.

This module provides the student with an understanding of techniques used in environmental sampling, sample collection, sample pre-treatments prior to analysis and chemical analysis with a focus on water pollution.

1. Design and implement a water-sampling programme.
2. Practise sample collection and undertake sample pre-treatment for laboratory analysis.
3. Describe and explain the chemistry of natural waters.
4. Use wet chemistry and advanced instrumental techniques for the analysis of water, sediment, plant and animal tissue.

The module will deliver an overview of the role of quality in the management of the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and medical device industries. The module will provide an introduction to the legislation governing the authorisation of medicinal products and devices in Ireland and in Europe. The roles and responsibilities of the MA holder, the QP and the competent authorities will also be explored.

1. Analyse the role quality has in the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and medical device industries.
2. Discriminate between the principles of QA, QC, GLP, GCP, cGMP and demonstrate the benefits of their implementation.

This module provides a summary of the fundamental principles of pharmacology. It aims to provide an overview of the actions of drugs in various body systems and develop an understanding of the molecular mechanism of drug action.

3. Evaluate how drugs act as therapeutic agents in the treatment of disease.

The module aims to expand on a basic knowledge of instrumental analysis and provide a more in-depth understanding of the advances in chromatographic and thermal analysis techniques. It will also provide a basic understanding of photocatalytic reactions and sensor fabrication. The module also aims to develop laboratory skills in the organization and accomplishment of set practical tasks.

To develop research skills to a level that allows a student to design a specific project and write a literature review for that project.

This module will introduce the learner to the basic concepts of toxicology and develop an understanding of the applications of toxicology.

1. Critically analyse the main groups of toxic agents with reference to their chemical nature, physical forms, and effects.
2. Evaluate the different routes of uptake of toxic compounds into the human body and how they are subsequently eliminated.
3. Assess the effects of drugs and alcohol on human performance and evaluate how certain drugs/alcohol are regulated by the law.
4. Appraise the analytical methods used by toxicologists.
5. Evaluate various sample preparation techniques used prior to the analysis of compounds of toxicological interest.
6. Integrate the basic theoretical concepts of toxicology with the practical aspects of the module.

It will similarly introduce the concepts and methodologies involved in the development of drug agonists and antagonists from lead peptides and proteins.

This module aims to provide the student with a thorough knowledge of industrial chemistry with a focus on pharmaceutical manufacture. It will also equip the student with knowledge of pharmaceutical plant design and processes involved in the pharmaceutical industry.

3. Critically analyse the processes of granulation and tablet manufacturing.

6. Evaluate the environmental impact of pharmaceutical production.

The Operation Management and Lean Techniques module will explore the areas of operation management, production planning and process control, focusing on the 'lean' concept and its applications. This module will examine issues related to performance management and how operations can be improved using lean tools and techniques. This module will consider the design and flow of industrial processes and supply chain management.

2. Analyse process layouts and design and associated flow implications.
3. Explain how lean synchronisation and the associated tools can improve operations performance.
4. Develop and analysis production control charts and evaluate factors that affect supply chains.
